big pic

If you haven’t set up RSS feeds on your N95, or you’re just learning about RSS for the first time, here’s a quick guide to getting started.

RSS feeds are convenient because they enable you to receive site updates on your device without having to check the site for updates yourself. Once you sign up for an RSS feed, it is sent to an RSS feed aggregator on your device. You can read more about RSS here.

For this article, I’ll set up a few RSS feeds using the feed reader that comes with your N95 as part of the s60 browser.

Let’s start by using a page that you can’t access on your mobile browser, but that you’d like to access via RSS feed on your mobile. I’ll use Workshop as an example, because you can’t access the Workshop page on your N95 browser, but you can access the Workshop RSS feed and get most of the Workshop content. So let’s set it up.

Nokia Nseries Workshop

If you go to the main Nseries Workshop page on your computer’s browser (not your N95), you will see a “Subscribe to Workshop” link on the right-hand side of the page, along with the orange RSS logo. When you click on it, you get a list of options that allows you to choose the feeds you want.

You could cut and paste the link and send it to your device, then open it in your browser to access the feed. Or you could use your barcode reader to scan the mobile code below. (Learn how to create your own mobile codes for any URL here.)

After you scan the code, you should see the following screen with the link to the RSS feed.

Open that link in your browser. You will see the Web feeds screen, which now contains the Workshop feed.

Click on it to see the RSS feed of Workshop articles.

Where is this feed located? If you go to the Bookmarks page, you will see the link to Web feeds.

Click on Web feeds and you’ll see the link to the Workshop feed.

Now you just have to go to the Workshop feed and refresh it to see the latest Workshop content.

Next, let’s look at a site on your N95 and sign up for the RSS feed from there. I’ll use Engadget as an example.

Engadget

Go to http://engadget.com on your N95 browser. As you can see from the image below, the scrolling map of the page lets you make out a tiny RSS logo in the upper right corner of the page.

If you scroll over to the upper right corner, you’ll see it in more detail.

Click on the RSS logo and you’ll see the feed appear alongside your previous feed, in this case Workshop:

For some sites, there’s an easier option. You can simply click the upper right button on the front of the N95, and if you see a Subscribe option, you can click there and subscribe to the RSS feed without having to search for the logo. I deleted the feed and set it up again using that method below.

Now let’s rename the feeds to make them more recognizable. Highlight the RSS 2.0 feed from Engadget and click on Options, Manage Feed and Edit.

Change the name of the feed from RSS 2.0 to Engadget. When it asks if you want to save changes, click Yes.

Now let’s do the same for the Workshop feed.

And there you go. You just set up your first two RSS feeds. And because there are new articles to read, the Bookmarks page will indicate that there are new feeds with the graphic below.

That’s a good start for RSS feeds. Next week, I’ll show you an example of another aggregator, Mobispine, to demonstrate another method of getting feeds.

If you have other methods of getting RSS feeds, share them in the comments section.
