There are several simple ways to transfer music from your PC to your N95. Here’s a quick guide to your options.

Compatibility

Before you get started, make sure your PC and device are compatible. Your PC should have one of the following:

• Microsoft Windows XP operating system (or later)
• A compatible version of Windows Media Player (details can be found here)
• Nokia PC Suite 6.7 or later

Once you know you’re compatible, you’re ready to connect.

Connecting to your PC

Your first option is a USB cable, which comes with your device. If you’ve misplaced it, you can always pick up a new one at a local mobile device store. Just make sure the USB connections are the right fit for your N95. A USB cable is best for transferring large files or a lot of files at one time.

Your second option is Bluetooth. Since devices with Bluetooth wireless technology communicate using radio waves, your device and PC only need to be within 10 meters (33 feet) of each other, barring interference from obstructions such as walls or other electronic devices. Bluetooth increases the demand on battery power, so remember to turn it off when you’re not using it.

Once you’ve chosen your connection, you’re ready to begin transferring your music. There are three ways to do this.

Transfer option #1: Data transfer mode

You can view your device as an external hard drive and transfer files just like you would with any other external hard drive. If you choose this method, a compatible memory card needs to be inserted in the device.

If you are using the USB cable, select Data transfer or Mass storage as the connection mode.

Then you can access your device memory as an external drive (select My Computer and it should appear on the list of available drives). Drag and drop your music files into the Music Downloads file on your N95. Finally, follow the “Refreshing your music library” directions at the end of this article.

Transfer option #2: Media player mode

The second way to transfer music is by synchronizing your device with your Windows Media Player. For this method, you also need a compatible memory card inserted in your device.

1. Connect the compatible USB cable and select Media player as the connection mode.

2. On your PC, open Windows Media Player and click the Sync tab.

3. For manual synchronization, select your device in the Windows Media Player list pane.

4. Drag the songs, playlists and albums that you want to transfer to the list pane.

5. To remove songs or albums, select an item on the list, and click Remove from list.

6. Check that the list pane contains the files you want to synchronize and that there is enough free memory on the device. Click Start Sync to start the synchronization.

Tip: If you want to take a shortcut, click the Sync this device automatically check box under Set up Sync > Sync and the music library in your device is automatically updated based on the playlists you have selected. If no playlists have been selected, the whole PC music library is selected for synchronization. To change this default file transfer option in your Windows Media Player, clear or select the Sync this device automatically check box.

If your PC library contains more files than can fit in the device memory or the compatible memory card of your device, Windows Media Player selects manual synchronization.

Transfer option #3: PC Suite mode

The third way to transfer music to your device is with the Nokia Music Manager in the Nokia PC Suite application.

1. Make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest Nokia PC Suite to your device. If you haven’t done this, you can download it here.

2. Connect the USB cable and select PC Suite as the connection mode.

3. Open the Nokia Music Manager in the Nokia PC Suite. Your device name will appear in the Nokia Music Manager display.

4. To select the device memory you’d like to transfer your tunes to, click Options > Settings. Click on the tab with your device name, click Browse, and then select a memory location.

5. In the main display, My Collection will show the tracks available to transfer. Once you’ve selected your tracks, click File > Copy to Phone. Select your device name and the transfer will begin.

6. After the transfer is complete, you can manage your music through the Nokia Music Manager by selecting your device name in the main display.

7. When you’ve got all your tunes transferred and organized, disconnect your USB cable and you’re done.

Refreshing your music library

You’ve transferred your music to your device, but it’s not showing up. Why not? Chances are you skipped an important step: refreshing your music library. This feature updates your device with all the files that you have transferred. To do this, in the Music menu, simply select Options > Refresh Music Library.
